Tips for cutting down or quitting alcohol
If you’re thinking about drinking less or quitting alcohol, you’ve already made a big first step. Change can feel hard, but many people find that cutting down or stopping completely makes life better in lots of ways.

Why cut down or quit?
Alcohol might feel like it helps in the moment, but cutting back or stopping can bring benefits like:
- Better sleep and more energy
- Saving money
- Improved mood and mental health
- Healthier liver, heart, and body
- Improved relationships with family and friends
There isn’t a “right” way to cut down or quit alcohol. You can cut back slowly, take drink-free days, or stop completely.
What about cravings or withdrawals?
It’s normal to get cravings, even after you’ve cut down. But if you’re dependent on alcohol, or think you might be, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. You may experience withdrawal symptoms like sweating, shaking, or feeling sick. In rare cases, withdrawal can be serious (called delirium tremens).
